Adapter alternative to SAE Code 62 flanges
By Design World Staff | January 28, 2011
High amounts of vibration and shock are common in subsea oil and gas applications. The family of Dual Seal Flange Adapters counteracts these conditions with reliable and safe versions of flanges for four-bolt connections. The new adapters are an alternative to traditional SAE Code 62 Flanges. Available in standard Code 62 footprint sizes ½ in. (-8), 1 in. (-16), and 1 ½ in. (-24), they incorporate both radial and face seal methods for improved port retention and increased sealing capacity. They reduce the potential for system leakage and air/water ingression caused by side loading of conventional flange face seal connections, thereby reducing the likelihood of a costly field replacement.
The primary radial seal improves working pressure rating in certain configurations. The adapters have been tested to 7,500 psi (515 bar) with a 4:1 design factor. Reliability at these system pressures was validated by conducting impulse testing for 1,000,000 cycles. The face seal resists external environmental pressures.
The addition of a captive O-ring groove to the traditional SAE J518 flange head further reduces the potential for leaks by improving seal retention and eliminating O-ring related assembly errors. The flange head is interchangeable with commercially available flange components and hardware because it is patterned after ISO 6162/SAE J518 flange bolt design.
The adapters are NACE MR0175 compliant (National Association for Corrosion Engineers; Materials for use in H2S-containing environments in oil and gas production). They are constructed from SAE 316/316L stainless steel and are fully Heat Code Traceable. Both the radial seal and face seal O-rings are Nitrile 90 durometer.
