Ride A Vintage London Underground Train

Fancy riding on a tube train from the 1930s? Book now.

London Underground recently marked 160 years since the opening of the first section of Underground line — from Paddington to Farringdon. As part of the celebrations, tube fans can take a ride on a 1938-stock train.

The special tours operate on the weekend of 10-11 June 2023. You'll be able to board the art-deco-style carriages at Acton Town and ride the Piccadilly line down to Heathrow and back.

The event is for anyone, but families are particularly welcome. For the one-and-a-quarter-hour journey, you'll be joined by actors portraying passengers from the early decades of the Underground. Children can also enjoy craft activities, including a session making Oyster card holders.

TfL provided a description of the train: "The 1938 stock was the first kind of Tube train to have all of the electrical equipment underneath the floor, combining the latest technology of the time with quintessential late 1930s style. These trains served London, on several deep-level Tube lines, for half a century. The beautifully restored electrified trains are made up of four cars complete with green and red moquette seating, grab handles and distinctive Art Deco light fittings".

Tickets, available from London Transport Museum's site, are £28.50 for adults, £15 for kids with under 3s free and concessions available.
